Technology and Process Description

Technology and Process Description

Pressure Sand Filters and Multimedia Filters are only slightly different from each other with different media composition used for various types of water filtration purposes. While pressure sand filters are used only to filter excessive physical impurities (Turbidity, Suspended Solids etc) from water, multimedia filters - using depth filtration technology (DFT) - combine the functional advantages of pressure sand filters and activated carbon filters thereby removing odour, colour, residual chlorine and VOCs in addition to physical contaminants

Media Composition

Pressure Sand Filters Multimedia Filters
Graded Quartz Sand Graded Quartz Sand
Sieved Fine White Sand Sieved Fine White Sand
Pebbles | Silex Activated Carbon Granules of high IV

When water is pumped through the Pressure Sand Filter or Multimedia Filtration plants, the multi-layered media effectively filters excessive turbidity, suspended solids, bad odour, colour, residual chlorine and to a certain extent VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) present in the water. Besides, the media composition also enhances the dirt holding capacity of the water filtration plants with minimal pressure drop across the media bed at higher velocities.

In the event of very high level of suspended solids or in high volume filtration plants, measured dosing of coagulants and flocculants are used to enhance the efficiency of the filtration plant.

Correct composition and alignment of the media helps in ensuring even distribution of the filtration load (phased removal of physical contaminants throughout the filter bed) thus allowing much longer ‘Filter Run Times’. It also facilitates easy maintenance of the Filtration Plant resulting in longer life of the media.

Maintenance of Filtration Plants

Maintenance of Filtration Plants

Backwash: The accumulated physical and other impurities need to be removed from the media on a periodical basis to ensure that the Filters always deliver optimal performance. The impurities trapped in the media are removed by backwash process in which the direction of the water flow is reversed. In this backwash process, the reversed water flow agitates and loosens the media bed and all the impurities are flushed out through the backwash outlet-valve.

Since the water that is used for backwashing will be having high concentration of physical impurities, the same can be again treated and reused to avoid environmental issues.

Rinse: Once the backwash operation is completed, rinsing should be done to reset the media and make it ready for the next filtration cycle.

These maintenance operations need to be performed at prescribed intervals for optimal performance and longer life of the filtration plants.

Air Scouring is required in high volume water filtration plants to aid and complete the backwashing and rinsing processes.

Clarifiers for High Turbid Water

Clarifiers For High Turbid Water

Clarifiers are required when water contains excessive turbidity, suspended solids and colloidal particles. In the treatment scheme, it acts as a pre-treatment to the Filtration Plants and is also a crucial part of Sewage Treatment Plants. Generally, surface water sources such as rivers, streams and seas will have higher concentration of such physical impurities.

Most of the clarifier tanks are of circular or rectangular design. Various types of clarifiers in a variety of sizes are available, as detailed here below, based on specific requirements and site conditions.

Clarifiers operate based on the principle of gravity-driven settling. Clarifiers are designed to reduce the velocity of the influent water and distribute it uniformly in a radial manner in all directions. This provides maximum settling time resulting in the efficient separation of settled particles from water.

The heavier solids and particles settle in the clarifier due to the quiescent conditions provided in the clarification zone. The settled solids are then swept to the centre well provided for collection of sludge with the help of moving scraper blades. The clear water overflows via a launder provided at the top portion.

Generally, the settling process is expedited by the addition of measured dosing of coagulants and flocculation agents. These coagulants neutralize the charges and agglomerates the suspended solids leading to formation of micro-flocs. The polyelectrolytes bring these micro-flocs together and the larger floc settles down easily.

High Rate Solids Contact Clarifiers ensure a higher clarity in water quality and greater tolerance to variations in inlet conditions. Since there are no major moving parts, it is highly maintenance-friendly and is designed to work totally on gravity.

Lamella Clarifier

Lamella clarifier technology is a versatile clarification-cum-separation arrangement in which solids, oil and grease can be removed from the feed water. The design of lamella utilize a series of parallel plates that maintain a laminar, stable flow in between the plates. The plates are provided with a mirror finish to attract and settle the flocculated particles. The particles accumulate on the surface and slide down due to gravity. The sludge accumulates at the bottom cone. Lamella clarifiers are compact and ideal for high suspended solids and chemical-based sludge and occupies only 1/5th of the space required by conventional clarifiers.
